Emotions can be difficult to recognise and uncomfortable to experience, and working with emotions forms the greatest part of our work here. At CHARTER we believe you are not responsible for how you feel but you are responsible for the subsequent behaviour. Thus we help you to make the behaviour changes first and then to explore the thoughts and feelings so that whatever changes you do make, last.
Common areas of difficulty include overwhelming feelings of fear (often translated as anxiety), fear of rejection, fear of intimacy, fear of failure, even fear of success, inability to express healthy anger (often experienced as depression), lack of motivation, low mood, poor self-worth, shame (feeling there’s something wrong with me), irritability, resentment. It’s worth noting that we often find that cyclical emotional issues are indicators of unresolved experiences of trauma.
At CHARTER we will thoroughly assess you to see if you would benefit from therapy with us, or from any of our workshops. We can also work in collaboration with other consultants and a network of external specialists who are well known to us. Knowing and understanding how you feel from a position of self-respect will give you the best opportunity to behave in a way that you are proud of. This is the opportunity we offer at CHARTER.
Emotions are what we have the most of and know the least about – handle them or they will handle you. Anthony McLellan, pioneer in the development of UK addiction treatment and co-founder of CHARTER
